Green Tea May Modify Lung Cancer Risk
Green tea is especially high in polyphenols, a potent type of antioxidant, and previous studies have shown that drinking green tea may confer anti-cancer benefits. I-Hsin Lin, from Chung Shan Medical University (Taiwan), and colleagues completed a study involving 170 participants with lung cancer and 340 healthy counterparts (control subjects).

Inflammation
Fish Oil Curbs Inflammation
Patients in hospital intensive care units are at increased risk for both inflammation and infection, both of which can compromise outcome. Philip Calder, from the University of Southampton (United Kingdom), and colleagues studied 23 patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome or sepsis in a Portuguese hospital.

Mechanisms of Aging
Omega-3 May Promote Youthful Biological Age
Telomeres are the endcaps on chromosomes, and the number of times that telomeres divide during cellular replication has been linked to cellular aging and death. Ramin Farzaneh-Far, from the University of California San Francisco (USA), and colleagues studied a group of 608 patients with stable coronary artery disease for a six-year period, measuring leukocyte telomere length at the study"s start and at the five-year mark.

Who’s Who in Anti-Aging
and Regenerative Medicine
Week of February 4, 2010
Mark Rosenberg, M.D.
Dr. Mark Rosenberg, Medical Director of The Institute for Healthy Aging (Delray Beach, FL USA), has been involved with drug research since 1991. Having studied the mechanisms of cancer treatment failure, the following concept has become blatantly apparent to Dr. Rosenberg. There are many substances that are toxic to cancer cells in vitro (outside of the body, in a culture medium), including chemotherapy and intravenous antioxidant therapy. These therapies, however, are more often then not, ineffective in vivo (inside the body). The primary reason for the ineffectiveness is that tumor blood flow is poor, resulting in a tumor that actually receives very little of the cytotoxic therapy that is being administered. In addition, poor tumor blood flow is associated with higher grade tumors and greater incidence of metastasis.
Dr. Mark A Rosenberg serves as Director of the Fellowship in Integrative Cancer Therapy. The Fellowship addresses cancers via safe and effective protocols engaging multiple modalities such as off-label pharmaceuticals, neutraceuticals, vaccines and other types of immunotherapy, novel drugs/substances not yet approved in the U.S., dietary treatments, mind-body techniques, hyperthermia, homeopathy, in addition to traditional therapy.
Modules III and IV of the Fellowship in Integrative Cancer Therapy. take place February 18-21, 2010. Call 1-888-997-0112 to register.

Dietary Supplementation
Safety of Vitamins and Natural Supplements Verified
In publishing the "2008 Annual Report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers’ National Poison Data System (NPDS): 26th Annual Report," the US National Poison Data System confirms the safety of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and botanical agents. The 174-page annual reported zero deaths caused by a dietary supplement in 2008.

Functional Foods
Apple Promotes Digestive Health
The adoption of the adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" suggests that our "gut instinct" has speculated that apples confer a variety of health benefits. Andrea Wilcks, from the University of Denmark's National Food Institute (Denmark), and colleagues engaged a lab animal model to investigate the effects of apple and apple product consumption on microbial balance in the digestive tract

Neurology
Eye Test May Facilitate Detection of Neurological Diseases including Alzheimer’s
In that nerve cell death is the key event in all neurodegenerative disorders, until recently researchers have found it difficult to study the processes of apoptosis and necrosis both dynamically and in real time. Francesca Cordeiro, from University College London (United Kingdom), and colleagues have developed a new technique that enables retinal, and therefore brain cell death, to be directly measured in real time.
